Cities can be daunting. The noise, the crowds, it’s easy to fall out of love with a city when it all gets too much.
So today I’m sharing my top 5 rules that help me to fall back in love with London and regain my confidence as a city girl.
Rule 1- Explore New Places
One sure way to rekindle your love with your city is to explore somewhere new. I’ve been wanting to visit The British Library for such a long time. I kept putting it off because it’s slightly out of the way as I arrive at Waterloo and spend most of my time around central. I’m so glad we finally went, I think it will be a frequent visit now.
Rule 2- Make Traditions
By far my favourite city tradition is the one I spend with my mum. Every Summer we spend a day looking around our two favourite exhibitions. The Summer Exhibition at The Royal Academy of Arts, and the BP Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery.
The amount of pure talent on show makes me fall straight back in love with London every time.
Rule 3- Don’t Let Anxiety Take Over
There have been so many tragedies in big cities lately, it can be easy to let anxiety hold you back. But we have to remember we can’t let our lives come to a halt, we must keep going and keep enjoying our lives.
If you start to feel anxious, stop for a little while, find somewhere quiet if you can, focus on your breathing. And whatever you do, don’t catastrophize. Every time you feel your mind fill with bad thoughts, re-run your day in your head and finish the thought positively. These aren’t ground-breaking tactics but they help me to stay calm so hopefully they can help you too.
Rule 4- Dress Comfortably
There’s nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable in a city. You’re constantly on your feet, constantly moving and rushing. There’s no time for blisters or riding skirts.
Rule 5- Smell Good
It’s important to feel confident wherever you are. For me, a lot of my confidence depends not just on how I look but also how I smell (especially when I’m squashed up against strangers on the tube). I feel ten times more confident when I’m wearing a gorgeous perfume. Which is why this little bottle of DKNY Be Delicious was stashed in my bag all day.
What makes you fall back in love with your city? I’d love to know.
